Great Great Grandmothers

 

On the left is  Margaret Lenora Pate Walker Taul, Mother of my Great Grandmother, Mary Effie Walker Elder. Margaret was born  in Uniontown, KY. in 1840. In 1858 she married Felix Walker. They had 6 children with my Great Grandmother being the youngest. Felix Died in in 1874 and Margaret remarried the next year to Samuel Taul.  Margaret spent most of her life in Breckinridge Co. Ky and passed away 7 May 1926.

On the right is Martha Jane Beavin Elder, Mother of my Great Grandfather, John William Elder.
Martha was born in Meade Co. KY. on 24 Aug. 1840. In the 1860 census I found her working as a domestic for the Williams family in Spencer Co. Indiana.
Martha married Charles Coomes Elder on 16 Nov. 1862 in Breckinridge Co. KY. She passed away 6 June 1920 and was laid to rest at Saint Romuald Cemetery in Cloverport, Ky.

Great Grandparents John and Mary Elder

John William with his son Charles Layton Elder. Charles Layton moved his family to Kansas sometime in the  late 1920's. His first wife, Viola Mae Basham died in 1922 in Stephensport, Kentucky.

Charles then married Eva Katherine Gibson in 1924 and the family shows up in the 1925 Kansas state census.

Charles was a farmer, At the time of his death in 1968 Charles had 51 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Our 1st Cousins

 5 children of Everett Powers and Eva Mae Elder Powers (Our great Aunt, Grandpa Paul's sister) have dedicated their lives to helping others.

Sister Ann Roberta Powers, along with 5 others, ventured across the ocean and came to India’s  Gangetic  plains in Mokama, Bihar in December 1947 to spread the charism of their founder. They began a pioneering rural health mission, Nazareth Hospital Mokama, to meet the various health needs of the people in 1948.   Nazareth Hospital with its School of Nursing and Pharmacy has continued since then to serve the sick from many districts of Bihar and West Bengal, extending up to the border of Nepal.  It became the first institution in Bihar to open a center, ‘NAI ASHA’ in 2004 under Bihar State Aids Control Society to admit and care for the HIV/ AIDS persons.

With the arrival of new missionaries, the Sisters entered into the field of education and took up Nazareth Academy, Gaya, from the Loreto nuns in 1951 to nurture the intellectual potential of Bihar.  Sister Ann Roberta Powers, one of the pioneers, continues to minister and live there.

Marian Alice Powers

Sister Marian Powers taught at 10 schools over 33 years, and served in five more ministries since her teaching days ended. One might think that among so many transitions, there would be some bumps and bruises along the way.
            Not so, she says. Every change has been met with a smile and a determination to do her ministry well. “I’ve always been that way,” she said.

Augusta Mae Powers 

I was late in my search of "Gussie"

Augusta Mae Powers

CLOVERPORT - Powers, Augusta Mae, 64, died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at her home.

"Gussie" was born on June 21, 1947 in Cloverport, the daughter of the late Everett Augustine Powers and Eva Mae (Elder) Powers. She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy and Brescia College, Gussie earned her master's in education from Western Kentucky University. She taught primary grades for the Owensboro Catholic Diocesan Schools for 22 years, serving at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Pius Tenth in Owensboro and St. Romuald School in Hardinsburg. After leaving teaching to care for her invalid mother, she worked in security at National Southwire, Century Aluminum, and Aleris.

Then there is Father Benjamin Clyde Powers,

Father Benjamin C. Powers was ordained for the Diocese of Owensboro,
Daviess Co., Kentucky on 10 May 1975 and served at Holy Spirit in Bowling
Green, Warren Co., Kentucky with a mission at Sunfish in Edmonson Co.,
Kentucky. Father Benjamin died in a car accident between Brownsville and Bowling
Green, KY. on 15 Sep 1978 .

For my Step Mother, Cherie

This is your great grandmother, Effie Jane Towell (1868-1959)  Your Fathers Mothers Mother. (sorry about the small photo, It's all I could find)






Effie Jane came to Idaho in a covered wagon in 1881 from Missouri.

Monument at Midvale, Idaho. It lists all the names of those that crossed the plains on the Oregon Trail, from Mercer Co. Missouri to Middle Valley Idaho.

This is Isaac Alexander Towell, (1835-1922) Effie Jane's Father,  He's from Indiana. He Enlisted in Company C, Iowa 8th Cavalry Regiment on 17 Aug 1863.
Promoted to Full 8th Corporal on 26 Sep 1864.
Mustered out on 13 Aug 1865 at Macon, GA.

This is his Wife, Emily Fletcher (1841-1920) Your 2nd great grandmother.

 Here is Isaac and Margaret Towell, Your 3rd great grandparents.Issac started his trade of blacksmith at the small river town of Towell, Virginia in Lee County where his father ran the ferry across the river.

Carl L. Elder 1938-2011

Last week another Elder went home to be with the Lord.


 My father's brother, Carl.



Carl L. Elder, 73, passed away Tuesday October 18, 2011, at Oakwood Health Campus.

He was born in Cannelton on August 1, 1938, son of the late Paul and Celestine (Gedling) Elder. He was also preceded in death by a sister Margie Sixx and brothers Joe, Bill and John Elder and a brother, Randall, in infancy.

Carl was a 1957 graduate of Cannelton High School. He was united in marriage on November 3, 1962, in St. Mark Catholic Church to the former Mary Kay Spath, who survives him.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and retired from Tell City Chair Company. Carl was a member of Perry County Democrats, had served on the Perry County Council for twelve years and was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus #1172. He had coached Little League, served as president of the Local Union 355 and was currently serving on the Tell City Electric Board.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Indianapolis Colts fan. He enjoyed IU and U of E basketball attending games with his son. He also enjoyed spending time attending his granddaughter’s activities and keeping up with technology.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Kay Elder, Tell City; a son, Brian Elder (Debbie), Tell City; daughter, Carla Moman (Tim), Indianapolis; brother, Bob Elder, Ferdinand; grandchildren, Abbey and Hannah Moman and Katie Elder and a loyal companion, his dog, Buddy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 21, 2011 at St. Paul Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Rev. Barnabas Gillespie O.S.B. will officiate. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday and from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM Friday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. There will be a Knights of Columbus memorial service on Thursday at 6:30 PM at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tell City Jr.- Sr. High School Athletic Department or St. Paul Catholic Church.

Odds and Ends

You never know what will come up in a search.

While searching the family name Beavin the name of Spath came up. I knew that there were Spath's somewhere in the family tree and after a family search I came up with Aunt Brenda's name. After a message to confirm that theses were indeed her family I searched more.

 The Spath farm house in Perry Co. Indiana.


Aunt Brenda told me that this was the house she grew up in.
We think this is her Great Grandfather Johann (John) Spath, Grandfather, Henry Spath and Grandaunts Maggie and Annie.

Awhile back I was searching for photos.....

This is Annie Mabel Elder (1885-1907). I haven't found a connection to our family but thought that this young girl looked a lot like my sister Joan's daughter Sophie.
